Our Historical Destinations
To get you familiar with the land we will be walking on, here is a bit of history about the sacred places and communities we will visit.
Q'umarkaj (Utatlán)
It was the capital of the powerful K'iche' Kingdom in the Guatemalan highlands during the Late Postclassic period. It was one of the most important Mayan cities before the Spanish arrival.
Today, its ruins are a sacred site where Mayan ceremonies are still performed, keeping alive the spiritual connection with ancestors.
Santa Cruz del Quiché
Located at 2,021 meters above sea level, this city was founded near the ruins of Q'umarkaj. It is the commercial and cultural heart of the department.
Here we will experience the transition between the ancient past and modern highland life, exploring its markets and vibrant local nightlife.
Ixil Region (Nebaj, Acul)
The "Ixil Triangle" is famous for its stunning mountain landscapes and unique culture. Nebaj and the villages of Acul and Xexocom are home to the Ixil people.
This area was the scene of hard times during the internal armed conflict, but today it is an example of resilience and natural beauty.

The Highlands & Q'umarkaj
07:00 AM: Breakfast
08:45 AM: Departure from Antigua (San Sebastián)
Transfer in Chimaltenango to Santa Cruz del Quiché (2021 msnm).
Accommodation: Hotel Layla
Q'umarkaj
4-hour tour in the ancient capital. We will learn about the rise and fall of the classic Mayas and the subsequent development in the highlands.
Saturday, Feb 14
Nebaj & Xexocom
07:00 AM: Breakfast and departure to Nebaj (2h 40min).
Your Adventure, Your Choice:
- Option 1: Explore Nebaj + Bus to Acul + Short hike (2h).
- Option 2: Full hike Nebaj - Xexocom (12km, 11am-5pm).
Xexocom Experience
Arrival approx. 5PM. We are welcomed by the family of Diego Ajanel, community guide and local leader.
- Authentic Mayan Temazcal bath.
- Organic local dinner.
- Night in a rustic peasant cabin.
Sunday, Feb 15
Ixil History & Return
08:00 AM: Exploration of Xexocom mountains and historical talk about the war in the region.
10:00 AM: Tuk-tuk to Acul -> Bus to Santa Cruz.
01:00 PM: Lunch in Santa Cruz.
06:00 PM: Arrival in Antigua Guatemala.
